My husband and I had just gotten home from vacation, literally... just walked in the door and my big toe started hurting. It was eleven o'clock at night and I was exhausted, so I went to bed and slept, toe throbbing and all. The next day I woke up with the same throbbing pain. I was limping when I walked... WTF? So, of course I Googled it - a case of Gout? Again, WTF? I turned into a Googling maniac, trying to figure out Gout. Ends up Gout is caused by an excess of Uric Acid in your system. I was probably dehydrated, drank a little too much on vacation and had feasted on shrimp and snow crab just a couple of nights earlier (all culprits potentially causing a build up Uric Acid in your system), so that's what I chalked it up to since the pain went away the next day. However in my Google searches, I came upon this podcast with Dr. Mark Hyman. Check out what he and Dr. Perlmutter have to say about the long term effects of Uric Acid.
